What is ergonomics?

Scope of the European Task Force (EUTF)

The EUTF is established in order

  • to promote ergonomics / human factors at the EU-organisations and its related bodies;
  • to investigate possibilities and to implement ergonomics in research programs, legislation, standardisation, etc. of the EU-organisations and its related bodies to pay more attention to ergonomics;
  • to become acquainted with the various EU-facilities, useful for the members of FEES;
  • to disseminate information about developments within the EU to the FEES members.

The EUTF is composed of three parts:

  1. The FEES ambassador with a special responsibility for the implementation of the scope. The ambassador is the chair of the EUTF. He is assisted by a Secretary.
  2. A network of ergonomists experts from various countries with experiences in EU-matters related with ergonomics; if possible with entries to relevant national authorities.
  3. A group of ergonomist advisers to support and assist the work of the FEES ambassador.

Scope of the Standards and Guidelines Committee (S&G Cee.)

The Standards and Guidelines Committee supports and stimulates

  • the use and application of European standards and guidelines on ergonomics, including the legal options;
  • the further development of needed standards and guidelines in Europe on ergonomics;
  • the dissemination of information about the existing European standards and guidelines on ergonomics;
  • the dissemination of information about good practices of existing European standards and guidelines on ergonomics.

Organisational context of these activities is especially TC 122 (Ergonomics) of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).

Communication and Promotion Committee (C&P Cee.)

A. Externally-FEES oriented C&P. The aims of the interventions are to:

  1. Promote ergonomics as interdisciplinary and participative oriented:
    • to the general public (e.g. the European Month of Ergonomics),
    • towards interest groups such as unions, employers, politicians, and other scientific disciplines,
    • special attention towards the EU.
  2. Communicate the contribution of ergonomics to the needs in our society:
    • types of benefits and results,
    • ways of applying ergonomics,
    • examples of good practices and types of interventions,
    • identity of ergonomics the various components of ergonomics,
    • role of the professional ergonomist (in close collaboration with CREE).

B. Internally-FEES oriented C&P. The aims are to stimulate and facilitate relations between the various FEES member societies through:

  1. Communication:
    • between FEES executive & committees and FEES member societies,
    • between officers of the various societies,
    • update of national activities scheduled or being planned (e.g. through the calendar of ergonomics meetings in Europe),
    • advantages and benefits of being a FEES member.
  2. Cooperation:
    • learning from each other about the planning of local activities such as annual meetings, training-courses, etc.,
    • learning from each other regarding interesting experiences, initiatives, management of society, websites, etc.,
    • harmonizing of national activities,
    • common scientific activities such as awards, meetings, etc.

The work in the C&P Committee has strong relations with the Website Committee, with the website being a strong communication means.

Scope of the Website Committee (Web Cee.)

The activities of the website committee are organised around the central aim of providing and maintaining an internet presence for FEES. The task spectrum covers the technical administration of the web server, the adaptation of documents for publication on the World Wide Web, and the development and implementation of web-based interactive services. Target audiences are the FEES executive committee and its working groups, the national societies and their individual members, as well as the general public.
