Foundation and Members
The Ergonomics Society was founded (as the Ergonomics Research Society) in 1949. At September 2005 there were about 1400 members, of whom some 300 were from outside the UK.

Activities
The Society carries out a range of scientific and educational activities, including
- An annual scientific conference, with published proceedings
- A public lecture (usually in association with the Annual Conference)
- An annual conference for students and recent graduates
- Recognition, through Society awards, bursaries and prizes, of outstanding work by researchers, practitioners and students
- Publication, in association with Informa plc, of three scientific journals
- Provision of information to the profession and the general public through a newsletter and website
- Provision of information on ergonomics to educational establishments, including schools, through a dedicated website
- Listing and monitoring the content of courses deemed to offer professional training to a standard acceptable for Society membership
- Setting and monitoring professional standards for the practice of ergonomics
- Promulgating a Code of Professional Conduct, to which all members are expected to subscribe
Membership
Membership of the Society comprises Student Members, Associate Members, Graduate Members, Registered Members, Fellows and Honorary Fellows. Registered Membership (MErgS) is the career grade of membership, which entitles the member to full participation in the government of the Society. Fellowship (FErgS) is awarded to those who have made a significant contribution to the study and practice of ergonomics.
Registered Consultancies
The Society maintains a list of Registered Consultancies, most of which would offer ergonomics consultancy outside the UK, which is available online.
