Activities - 2010 - Report June 2009 to October 2010 | |||||||||||
|
This text is an abbreviated account, the full report was made available to the federated societies. The most significant activity of FEES this year has been the preparation for the 1st European Conference on Ergonomics (1st ECE), known as 101010. This pioneering Conference was the initiative of the EUTF under the tireless leadership of Kamiel Vanwonterghem and has been held here in Bruges over the first two days of this week. As part of the Conference preparation, a not-for-profit Company (European Center for Ergonomics) has been set up under Belgian law to cover the commercial aspects of conference organisation in collaboration with FEES. The activities of the other Committees are described in their reports. The key developments have been a change in the Chairmanship of the Communications and Promotion Committee, with Tommaso Bellandi taking over from Kristiina Juvas. We thank very much for her work in this role, particularly the effort she put into establishing the European Month of Ergonomics (EME), which has now become a regular event and is being mirrored elsewhere in the world. Tommaso's plans for the Committee, which include the preparation and dissemination of a FEES Newsletter, are given in his report. Members of the Standards and Guidelines Committee have been able to contribute to CEN and KAN activities. The website continues to expand and to increase in popularity there were more than 85000 hits in the 12-month period from September 2008 to August 2009, a 13% increase over the same period a year earlier. FEES has become an official partner to EU-OSHA, the European Community funded Institute based in Bilbao. Our liaison with them and joint activities, especially in relation to their campaigns, are set to increase. This is particularly relevant to the programmes of the C & P and S & G Committees. It is relevant to note that some Committee initiatives have been constrained by a lack of funds despite such hard work from our very reliable Treasurer. Our income streams remain very limited, being only our annual payments from our Federated Societies and annual donations from our Sustaining Members (see below). A significant sum was anticipated from the running of the 1st ECE from both delegates and sponsorship / exhibitors but, although it is too soon to confirm this, any surplus is likely to be lower than what we had hoped for. For FEES to be more effective, especially by taking advantage of the Committee structure and engaging our Committee volunteers, we do need to increase our income. Expanding our list of Sustaining Members would seem to be our best option available at the moment. Since our last Council meeting in San Gimignano last May, we have had two executive Committee meetings:- 30 November 2009 and 31 March 2010, both in Brussels at WASO, FOD (one of our Sustaining Members, and for which we express our appreciation). Our President, Pieter Rookmaaker, was able to represent FEES at the 2010 IEA Council meeting in Bruges over the last weekend and I was able to represent FEES at the 2009 IEA Council meeting in Beijing, as I was attending on behalf of the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (IEHF). I have also attended various EUTF / ECE meetings as part of the preparation for the 101010 Conference. Sustaining Members (in alphabetical order)
