Activities - 2007 - October: European Month of Ergonomics

On March the 14th FEES Council decided to choose October as the European Month of Ergonomics. The Month of Ergonomics gives a good reason for all of the national Ergonomics Societies seek visibility and add knowledge of ergonomics in society.

The Communication & Promotion Committee of FEES invites and challenges all the European ergonomics societies to create activities during October.

  • The base of activities will be on those that different societies have already planned.
  • The European week of Occupational safety will be in October (week 43) and many of the ergonomics societies are very likely going to introduce ergonomics aspects in decreasing physical fork load as a part of the week (“Lighten the Load” – European week 22 – 26 October).
  • And perhaps we in different societies can also create something else, e.g.:
    • In co-operation with the national CREE assessment committees produce and spread information about the CREE certification for both the employers and ergonomists as well as ergonomics students.
    • Members of societies can write articles about ergonomics to the newsletters of enterprises and the societies can offer articles or a good back ground package of ergonomics for media in their own countries.
    • Some of societies have their annual conference or meetings in October. Perhaps it is possible to get now more publicity for these events.
    • Different kind of competitions can also rise interest in ergonomics.
    • … and there can be a lot of other kind of activities, that do not need big time or financial resources.

Please send information of planned activities to FEES web site to web master Dietmar Gude. He will gather all the activities on the FESS calendar.

For illustrative purposes, you can download a presentation (in powerpoint format) prepared by the Finnish Ergonomics Society, which has been approved by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. As event examples, the Belgian, the Finnish, and the Swedish Ergonomics Societies have planned the following activities:

The second day of the conference is especially dedicated to the European Month of Ergonomics. Two themes are in focus: certification of ergonomists and visual ergonomics.

European Ergonomist Certification

A workshop is arranged by the Nordic Accreditation Committee within European CREE, Centre for Registration of European Ergonomists, where the role and the benefits of the European Ergonomist Certification will be presented and discussed.

Visual Ergonomics

Visual aspects attract most ergonomists since eye strain at work is common and can induce strained postures and strongly impair general comfort of the worker, apart from reduced production, precision, and quality. A whole day seminar, divided into three sessions, is arranged. Among the lecturers, the most experienced researchers and practitioners in this area within the Nordic countries are found. The seminar is also the starting point for a visual ergonomics section within NES.
